A Brief History of P.O.R.A.

Our organization is an excellent example of how one person with an idea to serve the community and the desire and dedication to make it work can have a positive impact on the lives of many people.

Dee Nelson got out of her car one day when she observed a woman at the street corner. Dee spent some time listening to the woman and her story had a profound impact on Dee.

As a retired teacher her first thought to help these people was by assisting them with their education. So, Dee began her outreach by walking the streets of Springfield late at night in an effort to do what she could. However, what Dee quickly learned was that sex workers greatest need is a place to live.

Eleven other people joined Dee in 1992 and formed P.O.R.A. (Positive Options Referrals and Alternatives). In 1997, P.O.R.A. opened it’s shelter for women who are survivors of prostitution. Since then we have provided hope and safe housing to over 110 women.

Our Outreach Program provides food and other services to over 1,200 men and women each year. There are only a handful of similar treatment programs in the United States, all located in major metropolitan cities. Just recently, we have also added Human Trafficking services to better identify and treat this issue in Springfield.

Today, Dee Nelson continues to work as a dedicated board member and volunteer for P.O.R.A. Our organization, originally just her idea, continues to have a profound impact on people who are in need in our community.
